MATERIALS TESTING TECHNICIAN (FT OR SEASONAL)

Eng. is looking for highly motivated individuals with a background in construction to fill our seasonal (April – November) Materials Testing Technician roles. The selected candidates will act as on-site representatives observing Contractors at construction sites and performing basic field soil and concrete tests under the direction of other Eng., Inc. technicians or engineering professionals to ensure that testing, sampling, or inspection is performed consistent with project specifications.  A successful applicant will excel in oral and written communication and maintain a working knowledge of construction operations.  Full time positions are available for those applicants capable of other engineering and surveying skillsets during the winter months.

Primary duties include:

  • Observes, measures, and performs testing on soils, concrete, asphalt, and other construction materials on construction related project.
  • Prepares daily reports of observations and measurements made on job sites.
  • Prepares detailed and complete field reports with all relevant test results and observations provided.
  • Performs basic laboratory tests on soil and concrete and preparing reports of results.
  • Evaluates site conditions on construction projects and provides recommendations. Communicates with clients, contractors, and engineering and technician staff regarding construction issues.
  • Verifies conformance of projects with approved construction documents.
  • Communicates in an effective and professional manner with project manager, contractor, and owner/owner’s representative throughout project.
  • Performs maintenance and calibrate/verify status of laboratory testing equipment.
  • Compiles, analyzes, computes, edits and processes lab data and accurately perform various tests in accordance with applicable standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • 2 years of experience in general construction work
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and contract specifications
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Flexible availability with frequent overtime and weekend work anticipated
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years experience in municipal construction (sewer, water, pathway, road)
  • 2 years of college level construction/engineering courses
  • Technician Certifications such as American Concrete Institute (ACI) Certification, ICC or MCA are preferred but not mandatory.
  • Previous construction inspection and/or materials testing experience a plus

PROFESSIONAL SURVEYOR

A Professional Surveyor at Eng., Inc. will be directly responsible for land surveying on a wide range of projects designed to ultimately strengthen communities through infrastructure improvements for both private and public sector clients.  The Professional Surveyor will make all decisions regarding the execution of the work requiring professional judgement and allocate time to both the field and the office tasks as needed for the most effective execution of the project.

The Professional Surveyor will be the first point of contact with the Project Manager for the status of the survey work for each civil engineering project, and the point of contact with the client when performing private boundary or ALTA/NSPS land title surveys. Work sites may be anywhere in the state of Michigan, but primarily in Mid and West Michigan, and they may vary daily.  Occasionally the work may be remote and complex enough to involve an overnight stay.

On any given day your survey team may be involved with engineering design surveys, construction layout and monitoring surveys, ALTA/NSPS land title surveys, public and private site development projects, as-constructed surveys, or easement and right of way acquisition surveys.  The Professional Surveyor will be responsible for

  • the final quality control and quality assurance for all survey deliverables to the client and/or engineering project manager
  • participate in internal project start up and progress meetings, being prepared to report on the work progress and budget status for the survey work involved
  • assist the survey group manager with the operation of the total survey group for overall scheduling, budget monitoring, developing and maintaining surveying processes, preparation of proposals, and technical staff training.

Requirements for this position include

  • licensure in the state of Michigan as a Professional Surveyor or the ability to achieve this license within 12 months
  • a minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience
  • a knowledge of the state of the practice, surveying equipment, and pertinent software (such as electronic data collection systems, conventional and robotic total stations, GPS systems, and AutoCAD Civil 3D).
  • solid written and oral communication skills
  • ability to supervise multiple projects simultaneously
  • valid drivers license

Two years of supervisory experience is a plus.

SURVEY TECHNICIAN

As a Land Survey Technician, you will work on a wide range of land surveying projects to ultimately strengthen communities through infrastructure improvements. To thrive in this job, you must be motivated and ready to support our clients on a wide range of civil engineering projects.

A land survey technician is an entry level position to the land surveying profession.  The work environment is out of doors and year-round.  Work sites for Eng., Inc. may be anywhere in the state of Michigan, but primarily in Mid and West Michigan, and they may vary daily.  Occasionally the work may be remote and complex enough to involve an overnight stay.

On a typical day you will work as a member of a field survey team under the direction of a survey team leader.  The team may be

  • mapping existing site features for the development of civil engineering designs
  • staking layout of construction projects
  • mapping and layout of site boundaries
  • marking easement limits and rights of way, or
  • mapping the as-constructed state of a project.

The survey technician will be trained on the state-of-the-practice surveying equipment used to perform the work, and may have opportunities to learn and perform some of the office tasks necessary to prepare and conduct the field surveys.

The work is performed in public view, often on private property, so maintaining professional appearance and demeanor is important.  The technician must be in good physical condition, and attention to work site safety is paramount, as the work is often conducted in or along active roadways and construction sites.

The minimum education requirement is a high school degree or equivalent.  A Certified Survey Technician (CST) Level 1 or higher, or Associates Degree in either Land Surveying or Civil Engineering Technology, is a plus.

CONSTRUCTION OFFICE TECHNICIAN

Eng. is looking for highly motivated individuals with a background in construction to fill our Construction Office Technician roles. The selected candidates will provide documentation management and manages computer files for all construction projects we oversee and will review documentation submitted by construction staff, contractors and clients as appropriate to assure compliance with codes, standards, plans and specifications.   • Review and track materials certifications.
