As a Land Survey Technician, you will work on a wide range of land surveying projects to ultimately strengthen communities through infrastructure improvements. To thrive in this job, you must be motivated and ready to support our clients on a wide range of civil engineering projects.
A land survey technician is an entry level position to the land surveying profession. The work environment is out of doors and year-round. Work sites for Eng., Inc. may be anywhere in the state of Michigan, but primarily in Mid and West Michigan, and they may vary daily. Occasionally the work may be remote and complex enough to involve an overnight stay.
On a typical day you will work as a member of a field survey team under the direction of a survey team leader. The team may be
- mapping existing site features for the development of civil engineering designs
- staking layout of construction projects
- mapping and layout of site boundaries
- marking easement limits and rights of way, or
- mapping the as-constructed state of a project.
The survey technician will be trained on the state-of-the-practice surveying equipment used to perform the work, and may have opportunities to learn and perform some of the office tasks necessary to prepare and conduct the field surveys.
The work is performed in public view, often on private property, so maintaining professional appearance and demeanor is important. The technician must be in good physical condition, and attention to work site safety is paramount, as the work is often conducted in or along active roadways and construction sites.
The minimum education requirement is a high school degree or equivalent. A Certified Survey Technician (CST) Level 1 or higher, or Associates Degree in either Land Surveying or Civil Engineering Technology, is a plus.
