2016 City Street Reconstruction, City of Norton Shores
Project Name:
2016 City Street Reconstruction: Norton Hills Rd., Hendrick St. and Stanwood St.
Client Name:
City of Norton Shores
Date:
2016
Location:
Norton Shores, MI
This project was locally funded and consisted of full depth HMA road reconstruction with drainage improvements, new water mains, and sanitary sewer spot repairs.
The design resolved steep driveways by raising the roadway, which improved driveway grades and significantly reduced project cost by limiting the amount of roadbed excavation. Roadway improvements included reconstruction with a sand subbase, an aggregate base, curb and gutter, and HMA and concrete driveway replacements.
Utility improvements included the replacement and upsizing of cast iron water mains with ductile iron pipe, spot sanitary sewer repairs, and the replacement of a failing stream crossing with concrete box culvert. Even with the need for an expedited project schedule, Eng. was able to obtain a Michigan DEQ stream permit for the culvert replacement. The 6-foot by 4-foot box culvert has a recessed cobblestone bottom improving stream flow allowing for fish passage, which had previously not been possible.
